“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” (John 13:14-17, NIV)

“And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, ‘This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.’ Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.’” (Luke 22:19, 20, KJV)

At Philipsburg SDA Church, the communion service is held quarterly and is open to all, believers, as well as those seeking a closer walk with Christ.

Our practice of Communion involves Four Key Components:

1. Preparation – we can prepare for the Supper by self-examination, repentance, and confession. This can be done individually, with our families, or in small groups.
2. Ordinance of Humility (Foot washing) – the Master ordained the service of foot washing to signify renewed cleansing, to express a willingness to serve one another in Christ-like humility, and to unite our hearts in love; and is done prior to participating in the Lord’s Supper.
3. The Lord’s Supper – our partaking of the unleavened bread and unleavened grape juice represents a participation in the emblems of the body and blood of Jesus as an expression of faith in Him, our Lord and Saviour. In this experience of communion Christ is present to meet and strengthen His people. As we partake, we joyfully proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes again.
4. Rejoicing – Matthew 26:30 tells us after the fourth cup, “And when they had sung a hymn, they went out…” Likewise, we leave rejoicing for all He has done! Psalm 118:1 says, “I will praise You, For You have answered me, And have become my salvation.”

What to Expect

• Ordinance of Humility / Preparatory Meditations
  The congregation will gather, and following prayer, you will be directed to various rooms (women, men, couples, families, seniors, etc.). Also during this period, as you are returning to the Sanctuary, our Elders and music team will facilitate a period of Preparatory Meditation with a series of readings and congregational singing. 
• Serving of Emblems
  As we return from foot washing, we continue in worship through a service of congregational singing and The Lord’s Supper (serving of bread and wine) which will be offered to each person by deacons and our young deacons-in-training. The bread and wine will be prayed for by participating elders of the church, and the congregation will drink and eat the emblems together. We conclude the service with a moment of testimony and a hymn of celebration as we depart to serve.
